Story from a truckdriver in Europe

I was a danish long haul truck driver in Europe for 10 years, and has just ended that career and begins as local truck driver instead now in 2015. But lots of funny stories from the roads in Europe.

The 3 main companies I have worked for as a truck driver !

My background
Better tell that my carreer before becoming a long haul truck driver was quiet different from steering a heavy truck, beginning as accounts trainee, accounting assistant, head of secretariat of a political youth organization in Copenhagen, a very short career as a production assistant on film production and a small role as an actress in the same film, warehouse worker where I got forklift certificate, real estate assistant, while working in the real estate business, I tried to build a digital printing company and invested a lot of money in equipment, but after some years, I had to close it in 1999, then again warehouse worker, then van driver in Copenhagen, then return to my hometown and worked on production factory, and then finally driving license as truck driver.

How it started
I took my final driving test with trailer January 21st 2005 - it was a Friday. Already monday a job, not daily but when they had a driver short - I brought out goods in a local area. I began to look for jobs on the internet and put my name online for companies to see, and in early March came a phone call. A company asked if I wanted to run long haul in Europe with flowers, mostly two drivers on the truck, starting from Odense 303 km from my home. I said YES.
March 14 2005 started the career as long haul truck driver in Europe.

My first 2 years, it was trucks like the one on this photo ;-)

The Transport company no longer exists, the owner retired. But the company delivered flowers across Europe. GASA Group is the major distributor of flowers from Danish greenhouses to the European market and is headquartered in Odense (the town is best known for the world famous fairy tale writer Hans Chr. Andersen).

The company I worked for was running mostly to places in Germany, Benelux, Austria and France but also a few times to Switzerland and Italy. Beside that I had a single trip to Hungary.

First story:
The first trip went to Berlin the capital of Germany,  12-14 deliveries with deadlines, during a night and morning. I was still a rookie driver and had no experience driving in a foreign country at all, and remember when we left Berlin towards Denmark we follow Motorway/Autobahn A24 to Hamburg and take exit 6, but I forgot and took instead the next exit 5, The other driver, with several years of experience, had driven most of the ride through Berlin, because he knew all the addresses and he slept when I was driving home. He woke up because he perhaps felt it was a different road, but was positively surprised because I via the next exit was back on the correct route and even a road he didn't know.
This was my first visit to Berlin in the 80's - when there was a wall, very different in 2005.

I learned that it was some of the toughest trip they had, and when we returned to Denmark next day, the boss came and said that not all trips were so tough. He was nervous that I would be scared and stop, but not at all and it took 10 years before I ended as a long haul truckdriver.

Next story
I will on the next stories take you to France, Austria, Spain and Sweden and Norway !!
My next story gonna be a trip I took with flowers to France - a New Year trip with my son to France in 2005/2006.
